Bob and I were ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY by the BSO performance last night of Benjamin Brittens War Requiem. Oh, wow! The UMD chorus was spot on, the orchestra played their very best weve ever heard, and the childrens chorus was enchanting. The program notes helped. I didnt know that Britten was an avowed pacifist and war-resister throughout the Good War, as the British called their WWII involvement. He used this deeply religious form, the mass for the dead, and juxtaposed the parts with haunting poems of a young WWI soldier, to really bring the horrors of war to the immediate human level. No easy solace here. Parts of the music were so incredibly modern and powerful in their musical effect. ... Ah, go and hear it yourself. Ill go again next time I see it on a performance schedule.
