Body odor is not always caused by poor hygeine or lack of deodorant. There are several things that can cause body odor. Ive listed them below with potential ways to minimize the issue: - Trimethylaminuria: This is a medical condition caused by a lack of an enzyme. It causes extreme body odor that may smell of fish. It is typically controlled with dietary changes, supplements, medication and sometimes antibiotics. - Toxic overload: People who eat very clean foods void of artificial ingredients tend to have less body odor. One reason is that the sweat produced by the apocrine glands in the armpit is cleaner and therefore does not smell as bad. People whose bodies are overloaded with toxins also tend to have stronger smelling sweat due to their body eliminating the toxins via sweat glands. Toxins may be from their diet, body products, poorly functioning liver and kidneys, or other toxic exposure. Along those same lines, people who are doing a structured detox often notice they have a few days where they smell a but stronger than usual. Ways to decrease the odor from toxins include taking chlorophyll daily, using diluted antibacterial essential oils on the armpits, and ... obviously ... avoiding processed foods. - Medications: Sadly, body odor is one side effect of several popular medications. Medications such as Cymbalta, Prozac, Effexor, Lexapro and others are known to potentially cause increased body odor. If this side effect occurs, work with your physician to find an alternate medication that wont cause increased body odor. DO NOT stop taking the medication until your doctor prescribes an alternative. Another factor that may help in the shower is to lather up and leave the soap on your armpits at least 30 seconds before rinsing. Soap needs 20-30 seconds to kill bacteria, so letting it rest a bit before rinsing often helps.
