Brazil bans advertising to children -- Banned because it’s abusive. Amazing to see a country respect children’s needs over corporate profits. It may seem impossible to believe but until the mid-1980s the United States had similar protocols in place. The generation that I grew up in had Saturday morning cartoonmercials, where our entertainment was woven so tightly with advertising we grew up not understanding the difference. Do you see the United States ever returning to a place where we enforce a limit to advertising directly to young children? How many of you make an effort to avoid advertising for your family? For our UK, European, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand friends Id be really interested to hear what kinds of ads and at what amounts are your kids exposed to? And what is the sentiments of parents near you? marketingmediachildhood/2014/05/05/brazil-bans-advertising-to-children/ (Hat tip to our friends Media Literacy Now and Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood for this story.)
