Buying A Juicer One of the first things you do when you decide to juice is buy a juicer. Ive been juicing for a long time now. I can give you my straight up, personal advice on recommendations. People just beginning to juice might want to buy a lower end juicer. There is nothing worse than buying an expensive kitchen appliance and it ending up under the counter. You dont know if juicing will fit your lifestyle or how much you will be using it. Juicing takes time and patience to learn. The smallest things like how to feed a cucumber or lemon through is something that only you, with time will get the feel for. There is a lot of things to consider when buying a juicer. Choosing a juicer is like a choosing an outfit to wear. If youre going swimming, you will wear a bathing suit. If you are going to a formal occasion, you will wear a tuxedo. Choosing a juicer is much the same. You must match the juicer to what you intend to do with the juicer. There are several styles of juicers available on the market today. Some are better suited for juicing certain kinds of produce than others. There is no perfect juicer that will perform every juicing operation with equal quality. Please evaluate your needs carefully before purchasing an appliance. In my opinion its like riding a bike. Most of us started out with training wheels.. The same goes for a juicer. Start with a centrifugal and work your way up to a masticating juicer and a press. It is about finding what works for you. Selecting the right juicer can be confusing. Should you choose a centrifugal juicer, a masticating juicer, or a triturating (twin gear) juicer? Which juicer will best extract juice from wheatgrass and spinach? Which juicers are versatile enough to make nut butters and ice cream? And, the list goes on. The table below classifies the wide world of juicers by type and function to assist you in deciding which juicer is best for you. **************************************************************************** Centrifugal Juicers I started with a Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro from Walmart. It costs $59 and when the blade dulls you can go online and buy a new one for about $18. I used mine all the time and the blades are good for about 3 months, give or take. I honestly wanted mine to die so I could justify buying a higher end centrifugal. It still lives, and depending on my time I still use it for time to time. Its not difficult to clean. I dont spend long amounts of time scrubbing it but I thoroughly rinse it immediately after use. I have a little brush that I clean my blade with. If you line the pulp bin with a produce sack or even Walmart type bag that makes cleanup even easier. *Centrifugal Juicers are the most popular and generally the most affordable type of juicer. In fact, most juicers available in department stores are centrifugal juice machine.Centrifugal type juicers first grate the fruit or vegetable into a pulp, and then uses centrifugal force to push the pulp against a strainer screen by spinning it at a very high RPMs. *Pros Of Centrifugal Juicers Centrifugal juicers are great at juicing most any fruit or vegetable and get the job done very easily and quickly. Some Centrifugal juicers are available with large feeding chutes that allow whole foods to be juiced without the need to cut and prepare food into smaller pieces. *Cons To Centrifugal: Juicers Centrifugal juicers have a more difficult time effectively extracting high yields of juice from grassed and leafy foods like wheat grass, spinach, lettuce, parsley and other greens and herbs. ******************************************************************************* I personally bought and tried a Green Star Twin-Gear and hated it. It was hard to disassemble, awful to clean, very slow. It had tons of parts and it clogged constantly. Other twin-gear brands may be different but I have experience in the particular brand. Thats my review of Green Star and it will also run you in the neighborhood of $500-$600. Twin-Gear (Triturating) Juicers. These are the most expensive type of juicers, but they offer the most benefits. Twin gear juicers turn at even slower speeds (RPMs), resulting in even less oxidation from foam and less destruction of nutrients from heat. The low speeds also decrease the aeration and oxidation of the juicer, meaning you can refrigerate and store your juice for a few days. Twin gear juicers are the most efficient type of juicer available and can extract higher yields of juice from fruits, vegetables, wheat grass, pine needles, spinach, and other greens and herbs. The pulp that comes out of twin gear juicers is the driest of all the types of juicers. These juicers extract as much juice from wheat grass as the wheat grass-only type of juicers. Twin gear juicers operate by pressing food between two interlocking roller gears. This juicing process yields a larger volume of juice. The high pressure squeezing force of the twin gears breaks open tough cell walls and releases more enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals. Twin gear juicers do more than just extract juice, they homogenize to make baby foods, nut butters, fruit sorbets and many have optional or included attachments for making pasta, bread sticks, and rice cakes. Wheat grass juicers are made exclusively for extracting the juice from wheat grass and other leafy greens, as well as some soft fruits like grapes. Wheat grass juicers are not made for extracting juice from vegetables and most fruits. Wheat grass juicers are available in both electric and manual models.(Note: all of the masticating (except Champion) and twin gear juicers are capable of extracting juice from wheat grass) ****************************************************************************** Masticating/Single Gear Juicers: This is a part of the system that I use. I have the Champion Juicer and I love it. It is easy to assemble, once you get use to it. Since 1955, many juicers have come and gone from the market but the Champion Juicer remains the gold standard of the industry: the most durable, heavy-duty juicer and still the only US-made juicer on the market. The customer service is outstanding. It also has a 10 Year Limited Warranty. I love to use the homogenizing body. You will need to order a greens attachment. It will run you in the neighborhood of $295 with shipping. I have bought and tried other masticating juicers but I choose CHAMPION JUICER over all others. Masticating/Single Gear Juicers: They use a single gear or auger that literally chews fruit and vegetable fibers and breaks up the plant cells, resulting in more enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals. Masticating juicers are very capable at juicing virtually any fruit and vegetable, and single gear juicers will also extract juice from leaves and grasses, like wheat grass, spinach, lettuce, parsley, and other leafy greens and herbs. Another benefit of masticating juicers is that they operate at slower speeds (RPMs) than centrifugal juicers, resulting in less foam and heat, which means more nutrition in your glass. The low speed also increases the shelf life of the juice so that you can generally store your juicer for a few days. Masticating juicers are also more versatile than centrifugal juicers because, in addition to extracting juices, these juicers also homogenize foods to make baby foods, pates, sauces, nut butters, banana ice creams and fruit sorbets. Some of these juicers can even extrude pasta and make bread sticks and rice cakes. Upright Masticating Juicers: Upright Masticating Juicers are a revolutionary new patented design juicer with all of the high yield, low speed qualities of a standard Single Auger Masticating Juicer but in a space saving, upright design. With these juicers, the juice is first extracted through a crushing stage and, before the pulp is ejected, it is then squeezed during a second pressing stage; resulting in more juice, and extremely dry pulp. The low RPMs of these juicers ensure high yield and low waste. Upright Masticating juicers are very capable at juicing virtually any fruit and vegetable, and single gear juicers will also extract juice from leaves and grasses, like wheat grass, spinach, lettuce, parsley, and other leafy greens and herbs. ******************************************************************************* Juice Press This is my favorite accessory to homogenizing with my Champion. You can also use a centrifugal juicer a press your pulp. I 100% recommend a Welles Peoples Juice Press. It will cost you around $400. It is well worth it in the produce you will save, not to mention the quality of juice you will get. It is more time consuming when you press but on the plus side you can store your juice longer than your average juicer. Juice Press: Pressing reclaims lost nutrients from vegetable pulp. The pulp from vegetables is too valuable to be discarded. Pressing actually releases vitamins, minerals and enzymes that literally bind to the pulp. The hydraulic pressure separates these bio-available nutrients which as powerful healing agents by dramatically improving red blood cell function. The live enzymes renew the tissues of the body. Allows benefits of green leafy vegetables to be realized. The healing forces of these best of vegetables can only be achieved through pressing.
