By Mashingaidze Gomo PROFESSOR Geoff Feltoe is a lecturer of law at the University of Zimbabwe and a commissioner in the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), the national body commissioned to oversee the national electoral process. In the constitutional definition of ZEC’s terms of reference, it is alleged that the electoral provision for a special voting day for uniformed forces was his idea, with the purported objective of eliminating any chances of rigging. And then it is alleged that when the day came, he suggested to ZEC that there should be a nominal roll call of the uniformed forces, which ZEC questioned and rejected as tantamount to interfering with the members’ democratic choice to vote or not to vote. And then during the same vote it is alleged that he publicly announced to the same uniformed forces that there would be no roll call, as if it had not been rejected by ZEC. And, given all this, what becomes apparent here is the picture of a ZEC commissioner deliberately causing confusion in a crucial electoral process largely expected to be watershed in the country’s history; determining whether we return to Rhodesia or proceed in Zimbabwe. It comes across as a relentless effort to subvert the electoral process in Zimbabwe in a manner that even tarnishes his own image as part of ZEC. thepatriot.co.zw
