(CPV) - According to the authorised agencies of Vietnam, on August 1 and 14, two Vietnamese fishing boats from the central province of Quang Ngai, the QNg 96416 TS and QNg 96674 TS, were on routine fishing trips in the Paracel archipelago when they were detained and robbed by a number of Chinese ships. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Hai Binh More seriously, on August 15, while fishing in the Paracel Archipelago, another Quang Ngai fishing vessel, the QNg 96697 TS, was stopped by two Chinese speedboats, both displaying the code 207 and whose crew confiscated and destroyed property from the vessel, in addition to beating the fishermen. On September 9, answering reporters’ questions on Vietnam’s reaction on the incident, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Hai Binh clearly stated that Vietnam had met with Chinese Embassy representatives in Hanoi to hand over a diplomatic note of protest. He added that the acts had violated Vietnam’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the East Sea, running counter to international laws, the spirit of Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC), the Vietnam-China agreement on basic principles guiding the settlement of sea-related issues, and the common perception of both countries’ leaders on humane treatment of fishermen. Vietnam demands that China conduct a thorough investigation and strictly deal with the behaviour by its forces targeting Vietnamese fishermen, and prevent such acts from recurring and ensure proper compensation for Vietnamese fishermen./.
