Calf Injury/DVT episode 3 I was interested in the assessment - TopicsExpress

Calf Injury/DVT episode 3 I was interested in the assessment procedure at A and E. The charming Doctor who looked after me began by measuring the circumference of both calf muscles. Apparently, if the difference between the two is less than 3cm, they feel this is safe to treat as a simple injury. If its greater than 3cm, they have to suspect a DVT and treat accordingly. Mine were 40cm and 46cm respectively, so I became a suspect DVT carrier, instantly. The first stage in a suspected case, is to treat with a drug similar to Heparin, but with a low molecular weight (so glad, I could do with something to balance out my heavier molecules!!) The drug in question is Dalteparin, which one injects subcutaneously at home to thin the blood and prevent the thrombus (clot, to you!) from growing until such time as the limb can be scanned by ultrasound. More in episode 4. Never realised a squash injury could be so exciting!
