Call For Sepedi To Be Compulsory In All Universities Sepedi should be compulsory at all South African universities, said Mothobe Ntsoane , the speech writer for Pedi King Thulare Victor Thulare. Speaking at a seminar at the University of Limpopo this week, Mothobe Ntsoane said Pedi-speaking people cannot properly speak the language or accurately translate it into English. “You find people have the same Pedi definition for the English terms ‘aim’ and purpose’,” he said. Limpopo University this year implemented a compulsory Pedi course for first-year students. Students are required to demonstrate bilingualism to earn their degrees. This was a first for South Africa, and it sparked some criticism among students and academics. One first-year student, Jelte van der Woute, told the seminar the Sepedi module was enjoyeable. “It was hard but I adjusted. I did Sepedi for a year in primary and it made me want to learn more,” said van Niekerk.Sepedi is the mother tongue for about 19% of South Africa’s population. Do You Also Agree??
