Casting Director Debbie O’ Brien is casting female Performers for roles in Jack and the Beanstalk at Wakefield Theatre Royal and Opera House, directed by Rhiannon Ellis, written by Chris Hannon, choreographed by Louise Denison and with musical direction by Jim Lunt. Dates: Rehearsals Monday 18th November in Wakefield Opens Monday 2nd December 2013 Closes Sunday 5th January 2014 64 performances over 5 weeks Fees: Rehearsal: £475 inc subsistence and overtime but plus holiday pay Performance: £650 inc subsistence and overtime but plus holiday pay Auditions: Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd September in London. This year, Theatre Royal Wakefield presents ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’; a fun, frivolous and physically athletic pantomime with a toe tapping 1920s theme. They are casting for a wide range of richly drawn characters and as well as fantastic singers and dancers they would like to fill each role with imaginative, characterful and committed actors who can sustain a high energy production for 64 performances over a five week period. Roles to cast: JILL: playing age: late teens Jill is a go-getting, girl power, physically adventurous heroine; charismatic, warm and engaging. Alongside being a rough and tumble tomboy, Jill has a softer side and shares many tender moments with Jack. They are looking for natural beauty rather than a glamorous princess and in seeing actors with experience as well as recent graduates. Yorkshire accent required. Singing: A modern strong contralto belt but capable of performing softer ballads (songs include: Walking On Sunshine, A Thousand Years) Dancing: should be a trained dancer with a strong jazz style to lead the Opening Number and an easy lyrical style for more intimate moments. SUE CHEF: playing age: mid 20’s – mid 30’s Gordon’s loveable and slightly dim-witted sidekick – bumbling and innocent. Sue has pangs of conscience when it comes to collaborating in Gordon’s diabolical schemes but usually tows the line because she is secretly smitten with him. Needs to be a physical contrast with Gordon – ideally he is tall and lean and she is short(er) and round. Needs a great comedienne. Northern accent – Yorkshire, or something different required. Singing: Warm northern character singing voice – mezzo soprano/contralto (song: Bad Guys) Dancing: a great musical theatre mover with good comic timing WENDY AND DOTTY: Great double for a mature actress, playing two strong and funny women. They are not being prescriptive with accents for these characters and are happy to see what the performers bring to the table and are particularly interested in seeing actors of all ethnicities for this double. WENDY: playing age: mid 40s+ Narrator, Wendy is the oldest woman in Windfield – she is the keeper of stories and secrets. She is an earth mother, strongly connected to nature and the elements, over which she seems to wield some kind of supernatural control. Wendy provides Jack with heroic inspiration and much needed practical assistance. Singing: Earthy, mature, soulful contralto. (song: Stranger to the Rain) Dancing: an elegant and stylish mover with good basic technique. DOTTY: playing age: mid 40s+ Dotty is the giant’s wife, she is warm but with a real edge. Dotty is sick and tired of years spent waiting hand and foot on an ungrateful husband. A real touch of the hard nosed fishwife, but can turn on a sixpence and show us just what a kindly heart beats within. Her position as castle cook has been usurped by Ghastly Gordon, whom she dislikes immensely. Dotty provides help to our heroes as they seek to escape the Giant. Singing/Dancing – as above.
