Centenary commemorations for the First World War are happening - TopicsExpress

Centenary commemorations for the First World War are happening everywhere at the moment, but here in Western Australia the biggest event of all is coming up this week, in the beautiful coastal town of Albany. It was the place where most of the ships carrying the first Australian troops gathered before departing in convoy to sail across the Indian Ocean to war. The ships carrying the Western Australian contingent, ironically (considering how much effort the state is putting into the Albany celebrations), departed from the city port of Fremantle. The 100th anniversary of the departures is this week, and theres an amazing program of events on down in Albany, explained in the link below. Its a town of a bit more than 30,000 people, and it was our home for quite a few years. I love it more than any other place in the world, and Im really looking forward to being part of this mayhem, with a total 70,000 participants expected, including Australias Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Ill be blogging about it all when I get back, but Ill also be tweeting while Im there, so keep an eye on my Twitter feed at @AuthorClaireG for updates from Friday. As it happens, after many years of waiting to write a story set in Albany, I ended up setting the recently completed mini-sequel to Between the Lines there, in the 1930s. Ill post a little snippet in a separate message, celebrating my love for this breathtaking place and the fascinating history it holds :)
