Central region stole the show on the first day of the President’s Running Shield grabbing five gold medals. Asish Chaudhary and Saraswoti Chaudhary, both from central region, grabbed gold medals in 100m race in boys’ and girls’ categories respectively on Wednesday. In the girls’ 400m race held at the Dashrath stadium, Anita Thapa added another gold in central region’s kitty as she clocked 1 minute 06.6 seconds to clinch the top spot. Likewise, Sangita Khadka of central region completed the distance of 1500m race in 5 minutes 14.5 seconds to take the pole position. Binod Gurung won gold in the boys’ category with the timing of 4 minute 23.3 seconds. Kumar Gurung came first in boys’ triple jump. He leaped 12.71 metres to win gold medal, while Archana Yadav of western region leaped 9.60 metres to take the pole position in the girl’s category. Naresh Chaudhary from far west region and Tulasha Khatri from mid-western region came first in boys’ and girl’s categories respectively in high jump. In volleyball, central region and western region advanced to the semi-finals of boys’ category. In the match held at the covered hall of Dashrath Stadium, central region overcame eastern region 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 to finish as toppers of group A. In Group B, western region beat mid-western region 25-9, 25-21, 25-14. In the girls’ category, western region and central region booked their berth in the final four. Western region nailed eastern region 25-11, 25-12 and far-western region beat 25-14, 25-10, 25-6 to cruise to the semi-finals as toppers of Group A. Western region also made it to the final four as group runners-up. In Group A, central region defeated mid-western region 25-11, 25-10, 25-13 to confirm their spot in the semi-finals.
