Chapter 53. The next day was a Monday and As my dad dropped us (Mpumi and I) off at school, I saw Olwethu standing by the gate. Waiting for me, maybe? Shame. I hadnt seen or spoken to her since her brother hit me and I wasnt planning to. So, I walked right past her and she called my name and I pretended like I didnt hear her...at all. Classes were awkward because we sat together in most of them and now I was just so busy listening to the teacher or scribbling something down in my notebooks. I did not want to talk to her. After school, I sat with Mpumi as we waited for my dad. Olwethu came to us. Mpumi: good to see you back. Unjani? Lwethu: enkosi. Ndiyazama... Im just sad that my best friend is mad at me. I havent spoken to her oko ndibuyile. Mpumi: uSindiswa? Lwethu nodded. Mpumi: oh...kwenzekeni? Lwethu: uhm... I dont mean to be rude, but can I please talk to her? Mpumi: sure. She got up and walked to some guys in her grade, bancokola bonke. Lwethu sat down where Mpumi was seated. I was looking down at my phone, chatting to Sivuyile on Whatsapp. Lwethu: Sindiswa? I just looked up at her, without a word. Her: why wont you talk to me? Mxm. Uyayibuza into emanzi kanjan. I just looked down at my phone again, replying to the text. Lwethu: I mean, I know youre mad...well, I expected you to be mad kakade but I thought youd have been over it by now. Cwaka, sana. She was not getting a single word from me. Not ethetha kanje. Tu! Lwethu: come on. I miss my best friend. I need someone to talk to. That wasnt going to work. Lwethu: at least talk to me. I know youre mad. But can we please be civil towards each other? At least. Me: why? Her: because I miss- Me: no. I mean why did you lie to your brother? Her: I didnt. I swear. Me: then what happened? Her: he came to visit me enomsindo and just started yelling. Nafika nina and then he did what he did. Me: mxm..okay. Her: Im serious. Who else did you tell? Me: oh so ndim? Its my fault?! Her: no, Im not saying that. Its just- Me: mxm...okay. Her: please forgive me. Me: Ive forgiven you... A long time ago. Her: then why unje? Me: because, Olwethu! You were on dr- She put her hand over my mouth. Shush! She said. Then removed my hand. Me: you were on those things and I dont know why. Why should I talk to you when you can barely talk to me about such things? I thought we were best friends and I thought we could talk about anything. I thought that you could come to me whenever you needed something, and vice versa. Her: that still applies. Me: so why is this an exception? She looked away. Me: exactly. And until you can talk to me about it, then I dont know. Ive known you forever Olwethu and to let this come between us shows me how much this friendship means to you. Her: it means a lot. Me: ha.a. It means nothing. Her: thats not true. Me: well, its how I see it. So, I just dont know anymore. Her: are you dumping me? My dads car parked nearby. Me: am I? Hmm... I picked my bag up, ndahamba and she didnt even follow me... Not that bendifuna ucengwa but I thought she would open up to me... I got to the car and kissed my dads cheek, sitting in the back seat. Dad: wheres your sister? I shrugged my shoulders. Dad: Sindiswa?! I was looking down. I looked up and he was looking at me through the rearview mirror. Dad: kwenzeka nton? Me: nothing. Dad: Samantha... Me: please dont call me that. Dad: tell me whats going on. Me: nothing. Ndizokhangela uMpumi. I quickly got out the car and walked inside the school premises. Mpumi was on her way to me so we went to the car together...and then left for home... I went straight to my room to change. Only my mother was home. Then I went to the kitchen to make myself some cereal. Thats what I felt like eating. Mpumi was making herself a sandwich. My dad had just dropped us off and left. I poured my cereal into a bowl. Mpumi: ngelixesha? Me: yep... Uphi umama? Her: she said uzongqengqa for a while. Me: hmm...okay. Ndagalela ubisi and then took a spoon, then went to my room, sat on my bed and ate. My phone rang while I was eating. I finished chewing quickly and then answered. It was Sivuyile. Me: hello? Him: hey, baby. Unjani? Me: ndiyaphila, wena? Him: nam. Why arent you replying on Whatsapp anymore? Me: xolo... I was making something to eat. Him: oh... Uzokwenzan today? Me: school work, wena? Him: homework? Me: yes and Ill be studying for an upcoming test. Him: cant you study tonight? Me: why not now? Him: I wanna come see you. Me: oh... Him: so, can I? Me: uhm...sure. Him: thanks. Ill call you xa ndiphandle. Me: okay. Him: I love you... Me: me too. And, I hung up. I finished eating quickly, went to wash my bowl and then went to knock on my moms door. Come in... She said in a tired voice. I opened the door and walked in. She was lying on her side, efunda some baby magazine. Me: mama? Mom: yes, sweety? She sat up and I went to sit on the bed. Mom: whats up, honey? Me: I need to talk to you... Mom: about? Me: uSivuyile. Her: what happened? Me: he uhm... He has a baby. She looked a bit surprised, but hid it again quickly. Mom: oh? Me: 5 month old. Mom: so, the baby was born before you walked into his life? I nodded. Me: and he says that he doesnt love his baby mama. Mom: but...you dont believe him? Me: I do. I know uyandithanda. Its just that... I mean. Why didnt he tell me when we first met, ngalomntana? Mom: haybo kaloku, Samantha. You didnt expect him to say Hi, Im Sivuyile...and I have a baby. I giggled. Me: no, obviously not like that. Mom: you wouldve run away. Me: I wouldnt have, mama. Mom: be honest with yourself. She was right. Sivuyile and I had broken up when I found out about the baby. Even though it was for a little while... But still, I had walked away from him. So, why was I lying to myself?! I wasnt even sure what the real problem was anymore. Mom: have you spoken about it? Me: yes...sort of. Mom: and? Me: were okay now. Well, Silungise izinto izolo. Mom: ohh, thats where you and Jay went. Me: well, yeah. Sindiswa!!! Your phone!!! Mpumi yelled from the other room. I had left my door open and my ringtone was probably annoying. Me: hes outside. I quickly got up. Mom: ndifuna umbona. Me: HAY MAMA!!! Mom: what?! Ive seen him before. I helped him. So ndifuna ukhe ndincokole naye and find out what his intentions are. Me: no! I quickly ran out to get my phone which had stopped ringing. I was about to call him when he called. I answered. Me: hm? Him: ndiphandle. Me: coming. I hung up, went to brush my teeth and looked for shoes and a jacket. It was super windy outside. I fixed myself up and then walked out to the car and saw my mom standing by the car, talking to Sivuyile. I approached them. Sivuyile looked nervous and he was scratching his head. Me: mama... Mom: hee awusazilungisanga nje. Oh goodness!! My cheeks flushed a deep red. Mom: ngenani. Me: no... Mom: ndisancokola no- Me: mama, please. Mom: okay. She turned to Sivuyile. Mom: Uza nini for lunch?
