Chapter leading to untitled novel ME My desirable skill, that is, desirable to Courtney and Niks is a skill that I would prefer not to have. You see my skill or maybe a better word for it would be ability, or maybe yet a more descriptive word, which is more accurate, would be condition, is my tendency to faint. While this may not appear to be supernatural by nature, the fact of the matter is that when I faint or pass out, I am unfortunately clinically dead whereas my heart pauses in mid-beat and the blood to my brain ceases to flow. This normally only lasts a few seconds, but in that short measure of time, our concept of time, my mind, in its absence of fresh nourishing blood cells, continues to operate undetectable by the established medical standards. A few seconds pass in this world, but in another world, another dimension maybe, I seem to live as I do here, and days, months, and years pass away under sleep’s deceptive wing. Encountering other beings in this alternate vision of reality is commonplace and I interact according to whatever situations arise. In my mind, during these sessions of, what seems to be the “real world” I will occasionally develop relationships with “the others.” When I say, “the others”, I’m referring to spirits which either take up residence in my mind, or spirits inhabiting a world where my mind travels. I’m not really sure which. I am sure of Courtney’s and Niks’ intent however. The way they describe their beliefs to me unfurls like science fiction. They believe that when I faint and enter into the previously described world or worlds, I pass through a doorway which stays open just long enough to allow my spirit through. Since the spirits already on the “other side” are unaware of my coming, they simply do no not have enough time to escape into what I call the “real world. It’s different when I travel the other direction though. And because they are aware of my presence while we interact, they are also aware that I will eventually travel back the other way, and that’s where they find their opportunity to travel back with me. The two “witches” have developed a potion. This potion along with the casting of a spell and a long spiraling black and white sea shell, which they obtained from Courtney’s family, is supposed to hold the key to trapping a spirit in this world at the precise moment that I awake. They claim that capturing specific spirits of certain past powerful humans beings and spirits of beings which have never lived in the “real world”, will increase the power they already possess many times, depending upon the power of the captured entities. With the help of Bones in locating high spirit activity and my willingness to forego consciousness for a short time, Courtney and Niks are on a mission to capture as many spirits and increase their power to a level unknown before now. They claim that their unchallenged summit of power will be used to do only good, which I believe that’s true as far as Niks is concerned but I have my doubts about Courtney. Courtney scares me a little at times. So basically my job on this adventure will be to pass out at the time Bones senses spirits in the area, then seek out as many spirits that I can, especially those who seem to possess unusual skills, then develop relationships with them with the hopes that they will attach themselves to me. I will have a lot of time on the “other side” to do this. On this side of the astral barricade the witches will keep me unconscious as long as possible, without killing me I hope, then wake me after pouring the potion down my throat, inserting the shell in my mouth and chanting their “containment” spell. If all goes well the witches will get their power, and from that we will all obtain payment via Courtney and Niks. If all doesn’t go well, we may unleash a power in the “real world” nobody in their right mind will want, and for me “not going well” may mean the end of me. Robin Ackeret (currently untitled novel)
