Check out this article from yesterday’s New York Times – highlighting a new pilot conservation program that pays rice farmers to welcome birds onto their farms, by creating shorebird habitat.: nytimes/2014/04/15/science/paying-farmers-to-welcome-birds.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0 Point Blue scientists helped lay the groundwork for this project by working with Audubon California , the California Rice Commission, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and The Nature Conservancy to develop and test specific bird-friendly rice management practices which resulted in the successful Waterbird Habitat Enhancement Program. Additionally, Point Blue is developing the maps of surface water availability used to pinpoint when and where habitat is most needed.
