Check this out - Chrostopher Columbus set sail about 6 months after the fall of the last Muslim city in Europe. The Islamic empire (often referred to as The Moors) occupied the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) for more than 700 years.. the fall of Grenada marked the end. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand had previously rejected Columbus pleas for funding to find a new route to India, saying he was underestimating the distance and cost. But then Columbus came back to them.. while they were camped outside the walls of Grenada laying siege to the city. Initially they rejected the idea yet again, but after intervention from Ferdinand, they decided to take the gamble. Apparently they didnt think hed come back alive but reckoned if he did, theyd have a way to trade with the East without going through the Middle East (funnily enough Dan Quayle wasnt entirely wrong). Grenada fell January 2nd 1492, they signed the papers agreeing to the funding April 17th, August 3rd Columbus set sail - the entire history of the world was altered.
