#Chesterfield Whats update! OUTDOOR PROGRAMS OFFERED BY PARKS AND REC CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA —The calendar may soon read December, but there are still plenty of outdoor programs available to ward off the winter blues. The Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a series of outdoor and nature programs all month. To register for any of the programs, call 804-748-1623, or register online with REGi. The fees include transportation where applicable. Radcliffe and Appomattox River Conservation Area Hike Thursday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Departs from Henricus Historical Park Visitor Center, 251 Henricus Park Rd. Hike the county’s newest conservation area along the Appomattox River. Traverse along a wide floodplain to enjoy views of the river, wetlands and vernal pools. Bushwhack the eastern section of the area to explore small islands and the fish ladder. Pack a lunch to enjoy by the river. $14/person Winter Bird Count Primer Friday, Dec. 6, 7-8 p.m. Rockwood Nature Center, 3401 Courthouse Road Planning on attending the winter bird count? This short course will feature a slideshow of the most common local winter birds. Learn how the bird count started and how it is an important tool for studying birds. $3/person Willis River Trail Saturday, Dec. 7, 9 a.m-4 p.m. Departs from Rockwood Nature Center, 3401 Courthouse Road This hike will begin at the Bear Creek Lake State Park and will continue along the Cumberland multiuse trail to Winston Lake in Cumberland State Forest. Ramble along lake shores and bottomland forest near Little Bear Creek, through upland forest and on some forest roads. The total hiking distance is about 4.5 miles. The minimum age to participate is 12. $28/person Rambling Through the Brown and Williamson Conservation Area Thursday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Departs from Henricus Historical Park Visitor Center, 251 Henricus Park Road Bushwhack and explore the Brown and Williamson Conservation Area. Trek to the vernal pool along the southern border before dropping down into Big Hollow to follow the stream. Next, hikers will ascend to the bluff to view the James River, then follow the bluff its entire length to the start. The hike will be approximately four miles. Fee includes interpretive guide. $14/person Radcliffe Conservation Area Saturday, Dec. 14, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Departs from the Parks and Recreation Maintenance Building, 9201 Public Works Road Trail-hike and bushwhack through the Appomattox River Valley to explore one of Chesterfield County’s newest conservation areas. The first part will follow a trail by the river and through bottomland forest, while the second part will involve bushwhacking along and atop the valley bluff. This is a moderate-to-difficult four-mile hike with some water crossing. The minimum age to participate is 12. $14/person 21st annual holiday boat parade cruising James Dec. 14 The regional James River Advisory Council has set its 21st Annual James River Parade of Lights for Saturday, Dec. 14. Boats decorated with thousands of lights will cruise the James between Richmond and Henrico and Chesterfield counties. Multiple viewing sites, several of which provide additional entertainment, make it easy for people throughout the region to view this spectacular holiday tradition on the James. Admission is free to all sites. Richmond — Libby Hill Park, corner of 28th and East Franklin streets, entertainment begins at 4:30 p.m., parade viewing at 6 p.m. — Intermediate Terminal Dock, Dock and Water streets, parade viewing at 6 p.m. Henrico County — Osborne Park and Boat Landing, 9530 Osborne Turnpike, entertainment begins at 4 p.m., parade viewing 7-7:30 p.m. Chesterfield County — Dutch Gap Boat Landing, 441 Coxendale Road, parade viewing 7:30-7:45 p.m. — Henricus Historical Park, 251 Henricus Park Road, entertainment begins at 6 p.m., parade viewing 7:45-8 p.m. Parking is first-come, first-served.
