Chiles win against Spain in Maracana stadium was not only historic - TopicsExpress

Chiles win against Spain in Maracana stadium was not only historic due to the exit of the current World Champions, but also a redemption from the last match they played in the same stadium twenty five years back. In 1989, during the qualifiers for World Cup 1990, Chile and Brazil were playing in this same venue. The winner would qualify for the World Cup, and Brazil was leading 1-0 when a Brazilian fan threw a torch on Roberto Rojas, the Chilean goal keeper. The goal keeper fell down writhing in pain and bleeding profusely from his forehead. The game was stopped and the goalie was taken out of the ground. Later by coincidence one of the photographers had pictured the whole scene and it was found that the torch fell a bit far away from the goalie and so never hit him. Investigations proved that the goalie deliberately cut his forehead with a blade and hoped to get the match awarded in their favour, and that it was a grand plan by them. Chilean team was then banned from 1994 world cup for this. Rojas faced a life ban which was lifted in 2001 after he sought an apology and Brazil accepted it. #futboltrivia
