China says 16 generals being probed on graft charges #China’s military has announced the names of 16 #generals who were put under #investigation for #graft, a day after the Central Commission of Discipline Inspection (#CCDI), the Communist Party of China’s (#CPC) top disciplinary agency, ended its annual meeting. For the first time ever, representatives from the military participated in the CCDI meeting, which ended on Wednesday, according to the People’s Daily. Chinese financial news service Caijing said that the announcement shows an unprecedented deepening of the anti-corruption campaign in the army in the past year. Ever since assuming office, President Xi Jinping has made the battle against corruption as a cornerstone of his governance agenda. During the CCDI meeting, Xi reiterated the warning that corruption was a threat to the survival of the CPC and would also undermine the military’s combat readiness. A day after the meeting, the #PLA vowed to beef up its crackdown on corruption. It also said that it will finish cleaning up the illegal occupation of military housing in two years. What to expect from China’s #antigraft campaign in 2015? • The crackdown is likely to deepen, with Xi terming it a “fierce and protracted war.” • More “tigers and flies” are expected to be netted. • Inspection and supervision of SOEs will be tightened. • Cliques and factionalism are to be targeted. • Officials who influence infrastructure & public land deals will be under scanner.
