Christian Pit Note From Motor Racing Outreach.. This has been an exciting Chase. It became apparent five races into the ten race ‘playoff’ that it would come down to Matt or Jimmie, UNLESS--- they both had a ‘bad’ race finishing 25th or worse. Matt just had his, and Jimmie will have to have his at Homestead to even come close to losing the championship. No one expects that to happen. In the first nine races, Matt and Jimmie raced “hard,’ taking risks, going for the win. This weekend, Jimmie will approach the race differently. He will do what is necessary to have at least one more point than Matt when the checkered flag flies. The only variables he does not want to face are parts failures that could put him out of the race, or some other driver making a mistake that he could not avoid. In other words, he will ‘play it safe.’ While the odds are that he will be successful with that strategy, it is not a ‘sure thing.’ In one of his championships, Jimmie beat Denny Hamlin when Denny lost a 15-point lead ‘being careful.’ In 1992, Davy Allison was leading going into the last race when he was involved in a crash with Richard Petty (Petty’s last Cup race) when Petty was ‘playing it safe.’ Kyle Petty won his first Cup race taking the white flag in 4th place and then passing three cars in front of him in the 3rd turn where they had crashed. We like to think that it is talent, preparation and personal skill that determines our fate. However, that is only man’s side of life. King Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastics that “there is a proper procedure for all things,” and that is man’s part. He reveals that “time and chance happen to all men.” That is God’s part. God created everything “good” and has allowed man to make choices ever since. Adam’s choice to sin has affected everything in history, and only God’s grace allows man to function with success as he uses and develops the gifts granted from God. This is the providence of God. He does not dictate every event and choose the winners and losers, but gives care and concern even as man is allowed to create strategies and work his own plans to the best of his abilities. Compare life to a race sounds easy and direct, until you multiply 43 cars going three times the speed limit for a total of 17,200 miles this Sunday. Oh yeah, with five crewmen going over the wall each pit stop, that is 215 men for say 8 stops or 1720 opportunities to positively or negatively affect the race. In addition, there is an official who may make a call that affects the championship. I am glad that our God is not confused by complications. We are in good hands thanks to the providence of our gracious God. He is our Father, He is just and kind. He is known through faith in His Son, Jesus.
