Chuck Cook 12 mins · Baltimore, MD · Edited · Joe six pack Oriole fan says Why sign a 37 yr old outfielder? Why are other teams making big moves but we are not? Here is the deal...... For years, Os fans have clamored for a good farm system. In 2005, we signed three good players, but added them to NOTHING because the farm system was horrible and we had no depth. What happened? The last two months of the season, just like in every single yr after 2000, the team collapsed in the last 2 months because there was no depth to speak of. Thanks to Macphail, Buck and Duquette, we finally have a real farm system that is churning out prospects that are actually translating. The problem is, Joe six pack doesnt want to hear that or believe in it because quite frankly, we have not HAD that here . The years of losing has trained our minds to think that the only way to compete is spending money for free agents. Open your eyes!!! Our farm system is suddenly loaded. We have a 2nd baseman who everyone shit on last yr because he wasnt Ryan Sandberg in his rookie season. Mind you, he skipped an entire level of the minor leagues. He is already a top 10 defensive 2b and while he is raw and struggled, he showed plenty enough for us to be very encouraged. He hit balls on a line over the centerfield fence that didnt get 20 feet into the air. We have a young man named Dariel Alvarez who absolutely tore up AA and AAA. That is the reason (along with more minor league of depth) that Markakis was not sought after harder and that is the reason why we are focusing on a short term solution in RF. We have depth on this team both in the minors and in the majors. No big moves NEED to be made. Just fill in the holes. You are not going to have allstars at every position. Not even the Yankees do. For those saying we need to make a big splash, who are you going to replace? Other than RF, which I addressed, and DH, what position on this team is sorely lacking? We need a true ace, i will grant you that. We have five fine pitchers and a very deep rotation, but somewhere on this 40 man roster, an ace will emerge in the next two seasons. Decisions have to be made, but this team is set up to be decent to very good for years to come as long as Dan and Buck are at the helm and that is a big if. Every year, we get frustrated because we do not make big splashes. Now, we do not need a big splash because this club is deep and good from top to bottom. It is just the 14 yrs of losing that makes Joe Oriole fan continue to doubt that. Go Os...
