City audits show Regina residents are already excellent recyclers. As of Friday, July 12, all homes with Blue Cart Recycling had their first collection day. The City had hoped that acceptable recyclables would account for at least 85 per cent of the material residents put in the blue carts in 2013, but residents are already surpassing the target. Residents are already at 90 per cent! The City thanks residents for the care they are taking to recycle properly. The City’s recycling costs decrease when there is less garbage mixed in with the recycling. A few items residents should keep out of their blue carts include: o plastic bags, o plastic children’s toys, laundry baskets and other plastics that do not have recycling numbers # 1-7 on the bottom, o tires, o propane tanks, o clothing and other fabrics, and o loose shredded paper. (Shredded paper can only be recycled if it is in a clear plastic bag and tied closed. This is the only situation where residents can put a plastic bag in the recycling cart.) Residents have already recycled approximately 633 tonnes through Blue Cart Recycling. Over 75 per cent of the homes put their recycling cart out for their first collection. Residents are encouraged to remember their collection days by signing up for collection reminders at Regina.ca. Everyone who signs up will be automatically entered into a draw to WIN a pair of bikes. The draw will take place on August 12, 2013.
