Class of 79 Howard University College of Dentistry News - Dr. Avis Simms Kelly & Dr. Monica A. Slack-Haynes Our colleague Avis is co-founder of the Metropolitan Health Professionals Association, an auxiliary of the Health and Temperance Department of her church - The Metropolitan Seventh Day Adventist Church. The group consists of physicians, dentists, nurses and other allied health professionals of Caribbean descent who left their homeland and came to the U.S.A. for an education but never returned home after completing their training. Out of a need to give back, each summer the group selects an island on which to provide free health services. The services they provide include blood pressure, diabetic, nutritional, and cholesterol screenings; limited ophthalmological services, and health seminars. Dental services rendered include extractions, scaling, and dental education. Some of the islands and countries already visited include: Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, St. Lucia, Antigua, Ghana, Grenada, and Nicaragua. This year they served on the island of Montserrat. Avis has been doing these mission trips for over 25 years. Avis and Monica are to be commended for their humanitarian work......simply outstanding.
