Controlling Invasive Purple Loosestrife by Releasing Beetles Among the many aquatic invasive plants that are trying to choke our rivers, streams and wetlands is purple loosestrife. Fortunately purple loosestrife can be managed in a clean, effective and relatively easy way….by releasing a special type of beetle that feeds only on purple loosestrife. The beetles only feed on purple loosestrife, so when they’ve defoliated the purple loosestrife infestation they die without causing any new problems. You can learn how to do it yourself. The Ozaukee Washington Land Trust is hosting a workshop on Thursday, March 27 where you’ll get instructions on how to raise the beetles safely and release them into your purple loosestrife infestation. Paul Klein, the Washington County Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator, will lead the presentation. This workshop is being funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI.) The workshop is an educational component of the Partners in Preservation project which endeavors to protect 1,500 acres of land from aquatic invasive species in southeastern Wisconsin (Sheboygan, Washington, Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties.) What: Purple loosestrife biocontrol workshop When: 5:30pm, Thursday, March 27 Where: OWLT home office at the historic West Bend train depot 200 Wisconsin Street, West Bend, WI 53095
