Cut to the chase! If Canadian banks were spending hundreds of millions of dollars to comply with demands from those countries, there would be outrage. If the Canadian government had signed an agreement with those countries for the banks and credit unions to provide information on people born in those countries to Canada Revenue Agency to pass on to China, Russia, Mexico, Iran or Eritrea, there would be outrage. If the Canadian government proposed legislation to override Canadian banking, privacy, human rights and other laws to meet the demands of those governments, there would be outrage. If the Canadian government was showing disdain for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for Canadian citizens and residents born in those countries, there would be outrage. Yet, that is exactly what is happening to up to one million Canadians born in the United States. The Canadian government recently signed an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) to allow Canadian banks to comply with the demands of the United States for personal banking information on Canadians just because they were born in United States or have some other bizarre connection to the United States. To circumvent Canadian privacy laws, banks will submit information to Canada Revenue Agency to pass on to United States Internal Revenue Service. What happens the next time the United States demands that Canada change its laws for the Americans? There is outrage among these Canadians and their families. They are saying no. They are prepared to stand up for their rights and the rights of all Canadians to be treated fairly. They are insisting no foreign government should be allowed to impose their laws on Canada’s sovereignty. The Canadian government has clearly shown that they care far more about Canadian banks and the demands of a foreign government than they care about Canadian citizens and residents. These Canadians are prepared to launch legal action to protect their rights and to tell the Canadian government that they are not second class Canadian citizens. These Canadians need help in standing up to the Canadian government. Most of those affected are Canadians of moderate means. To launch legal action requires money. Please contribute to this cause. We can’t do it without your help. If you think “But, this doesn’t affect me,” think again. What happens the next time the United States demands that Canada change its laws for the Americans? If some Canadians can lose their rights, then all Canadians can lose their rights. Don’t let either the Canadian or American governments destroy your Charter rights.
