DAILYNEWS MASIMOLOLE EXPLAINS EDUCATION SPONSORSHIP ELIGIBILITY There are a number of categories of students who are eligible for government sponsorship for tertiary education, according to the Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, the Honourable Patrick Masimolole. Responding to a question in Parliament he said these categories included new students, learners with disabilities, orphans and vulnerable children and children from remote areas, progression students and top achievers. New students were students who had completed secondary education such as BGCSE, IGSCE, A-Level and had scored a minimum of 36 points. The assistant Minister added that for 2012 and 2013 the minimum points were set at 34 to cater for the effects of the industrial action. Learners with disabilities, orphans and vulnerable children and children from remote areas, he said were students with special educational needs or from disadvantaged communities and had scored a minimum of 31 points, adding that for 2012 and 2013 it was set at 29 points. The Honourable Masimolole said progression students were students who had managed to attain a Certificate or Diploma qualification and would like to proceed to attain a Diploma or Degree qualification. He further said top achievers were students who had attained a minimum of 6 A*s (for Category A) or a minimum of 4A*s (for Category at BGCSE or IGCSE. “For a student to qualify for a retake they must not have been previously given a re-take to do the same subject or module. Students with a Diploma qualification qualify for progression to Degree for as long as the progression is within the same area of study and funds are available,” Mr. Masimolole further said. He added that students who were previously privately sponsored are considered for government sponsorship just like those who were government sponsored so long as funds permit. The MP for Gaborone Central, the Honourable Dumelang Saleshando had asked the Minister to state the categories of students that were being sponsored for tertiary education and to explain conditions that applied for students who had retakes and students wishing to progress to Degree levels after completing Diploma courses for which they had been sponsored by government. In addition, he wanted to know why previously self-sponsored students who wished to progress with their studies were not considered for government sponsorship. (BOPA)
