DR MUKHTAR AHMED ANSARI مُختار احمد انصاری मुख़्तार अहमद अंसारी December 25, 1880 - May 10, 1936 A devoted soldier and an eminent leader of Indo-Pak Freedom Movement * A well educated, talented scholar, Got scholarships and achieved MD and MS from England in 1905. First Indian appointed as Registrar in Lock Hospital London. Also worked at Charing Cross Hospital London. He was an Indian pioneer in surgery, and an Ansari Ward established in the Charing Cross Hospital in honour of his work. * An ardent humanitarian. In 1912 he himself led Ansari Medical Mission to Turkey to provide medical and surgical aid during Balkan War and personally worked there. It was an international goodwill mission which created everlasting love and friendship between people of Turkey and people of the subcontinent. * A key Nationalist leader of India. Among the top leaders of Indian National Congress. Had very close personal relations with MK Gandhi, Motilal Nehru, Vallabhai Patel, Abul Kalam Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru and others. Gandhi used to stay at his palatial house Darus-Salam, whenever he visited Delhi. For almost all through his life he was member of All India Congress Working Committee. He was its General Secretary in the years 1920, 1922, 1926, 1929, 1931 and 1932, and President in 1927 (Madras Session). * A passionate leader of muslims. On his return to India he joined Muslim League as well as Congress. Played a significant role in negotiations for 1916 Lucknow Pact. In 1918 he presided over the annual session of the Muslim League held at Delhi. His Presidential Address was proscribed by the Government because of his bold and fearless stand in it for the cause of the Khilafat and his unconditional support to the demand for complete freedom. Again in 1920 he was the President of the Nagpur session of the All-India Muslim League. * A visionary educationist, among the founders of Jamia Millia (National University). From its inception in October 29, 1920 Jamia Millia Islamia had the unconditional support of Dr. Ansari. He was elected its Chancellor after the death of its firm Chancellor, Hakim Ajmal Khan. He is also buried there. * A philanthropist and active social worker. He practiced in Delhi and served the poor people. His wife, a deeply religious woman worked with him for uplift of Delhi women.
