Daily Havamal for Odins Day, July 9th 2014: 76. Cattle die and kinsmen die, thyself too soon must die, but one thing never, I ween, will die, -- the doom on each one dead. My take on this stanza: Again, this one and stanza 75 are easily the two most commonly seen stanzas of the Havamal, and its easy to imagine why! Just as the previous stanza states, this one reiterates that we will all die and that nothing is permanent. The last stanza talked about fame and reputation never dying, and this one speaks of the negative to the positive, the doom. Now, does this mean judgement of the Gods? Shunning by our ancestors? A tarnished name here in Midgard? It likely means all of the above. The thing is, were not Christians. We arent supposed to fear our Gods and try to live a sinless life. But we are supposed to live well, right? We are our deeds, as many say, and this stanza drives that home rather well. Stanza 75 and stanza 76 should make you ask yourself the question: Am I living a life worthy of the Gods? They arent perfect, no one is, but am I living an honorable, noble life? Do I fulfill my Oaths and live well? These and many others are the questions you should be asking yourself on a daily basis. -Shield Wolf
