Daily Prayer 7.22.13 I am taking some time alone with God camping in the Navajo Nation, but I do have intermittent text and e-mail, so please don’t hesitate to let me know your prayer requests so we can continue in prayer together! – Chris. Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. – Colossians 3:1 “Lord Jesus, I want to try and understand the mystery of Your present Kingdom. Open my eyes and heart that I might see You today! Amen. How were you raised in your home? Some speak proudly of being raised in home where strict regulation pervaded all aspects of family life. Others remember being raised in an environment of constant inquiry and contentious discussion, where challenges to the status quo were encouraged. Still others will testify to an upbringing of benign neglect, where children were largely left alone to find their way of coming into their own. Paul, in his letter the Colossians, speaks of being “raised” with Christ, but he uses the word in a way that is unique to followers of Jesus. While Paul alludes to a particular manner of growing and living that comes from being members of the family of God, his use of the term “raised” specifically refers to a believers’ being raised with Christ from the dead. As Jesus was raised bodily to new life, in faith we are also raised to a new life of intentional goodness, intimate dialogue with God, and ongoing discovery of our mission as beings bound for heaven yet set apart for His purposes on earth. Once claimed in baptism and then confirmed by choice, we entered not only into a state of dual citizenship in the secular and the Kingdom worlds, but also into a perpetual condition of dying to the world while becoming more alive in union with Christ. As we begin this day, we can take a moment to recognize and give thanks for the ways in which we have been, and continue to be, raised to new life with Christ. Good Monday morning, all! Let’s join together in prayer for: The Achen/ Ford families on the birth of Joe and Amanda’s darling new baby girl. Praise God! Jessie, as she moves to Kindred Hospital in Culver city; please pray for her strength, both physical and spiritual. Debbie, that she might get the permanent home for the sale of her hats which she is hoping for. Lisa, as she tends to business in NYC and is feeling a little overwhelmed. Pray for her peace and resolve. Dedrick, Laura and John; as they continue their work with SSP; for energy, openness and a blast of renewed faith in Christ! The Taylor-Strachan family; as they depart the Palisades for Canada, pray for God’s assurance and the grace to embrace new opportunities! Dan, Jim, Sal, Fay, Jen and all those who are in treatment for cancer today, for peace, healing and strength. Lord of all, giver of life, we turn our hearts towards You this morning in worship and praise. Father, we stand before You as Your children, imperfect but sanctified by the blood of Your Son, whose gift of salvation we receive by faith. We are Yours, O God. Today we lift up to You our concern for our friends who are sick and struggling to regain their health; Lord hear our prayer. For those who are in the hospital and those who might otherwise be walking down a road of uncertainty and fear, we pray for a sense of Your assurance and Your strong arm to help them. Father, we pray thanksgiving for new life in our midst and for new challenges and opportunities that come to us all. Give us grace, O Lord, to never discount the importance of Your love or turn away from the incredible blessing of Your presence with us. Guide us all and keep us this day. Amen.
