The novel has been called a landmark work and covers a period of more than 170 years from the beginning of the 19th century, revolving mainly around the lives and fortunes of several families in villages in Virudhunagar district. The 1,200-page novel looks at caste conflicts in the region over the past two centuries. It has also won the inaugural Gitanjali literary prize. While last years award winner, Joe DCruzs novel Aazhi Soozh Ulagu (Ocean-Ringed Earth), was based on imagination and creative writing, Poomanis book is a research-based story - similar to Su Venkatesans Kaval Kottam that is a saga of the kallar community. Poomani, though born in a dalit-pallar family, has written about families belonging to various communities including nadars whose socio-economic and cultural advancement in the 100 years, giving rise to a prosperous business class in Virudhunagar, is a remarkable story in modern Tamil society. Pooliththurai Manickavasagam, aka Poomani, collected information on events and developments during the colonial period using archival sources in the region. In addition, the author also collected source materials from National Archives and the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi, National Library in Kolkata, and the India Office Library in London. Poomani is an acclaimed author and is famous for his writings on dalits. He deserves to receive the award, said writer S Ramakrishnan. The Indian express HC to Government go after big Land Grabbers newindianexpress/states/karnataka/HC-to-Government-go-after-big-Land-Grabbers/2014/12/20/article2580393.ece By Express News Service Published: 20th December 2014 06:00 AM BENGALURU: The state government on Friday submitted before the High Court that it has managed to recover 16,000 acres of encroached revenue land in one month. So far, over 46,000 acres have been recovered this year, the government claimed. A division bench of Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice R B Budihal was hearing a batch of petitions seeking direction to the government to recover thousands of acres of encroached government land. The counsel representing Namma Bengaluru Foundation, one of the petitioners, argued that the government was acting only against small encroachers while those who have encroached upon huge tracts of land have been untouched. Amicus curiae M Shivaprakash submitted that encroachers who belong to the SC, ST and other backward communities must be given an opportunity to submit documents to the legal services authority. The court then asked those who have been farming and living on government land measuring less than five acres to submit copies of land documents to the local legal services authority offices. The High Court again directed the state government to recover land from those who have encroached more than five areas and submit a report to the bench on January 30, 2015. The court also asked the forest department to speed up recovery of forest land from encroachments. Writer’s Petition Disposed Of The High Court on Friday disposed of a petition filed by writer B V Satyanarayana Rao challenging the process of selection for the Rajyotsava awards after the government pleader submitted that due process was being followed. Satyanarayana Rao had moved the court after his application for the Rajyostava award was not considered by the government this year. He contended that being a mechanical engineer, he had written more than 66 books in Kannada and Sanskrit and had contributed to the field of literature. The advocate for the writer alleged that while selecting writers, due process was not being followed. The government contested the claim and submitted that there is no lobby which works for the selection of writers and the applications are considered on the basis of merit. Hearing the petition, Justice S Abdul Nazeer observed that the selection for Rajyostava awards has become like a tendering process and that lobbying very much exists. While disposing of the petition, Justice Nazeer observed that hopefully the petitioner’s application will be considered for the award in 2015.
