Dear CUFA Colleagues, My name is Steve Masyada, and I am with the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship out of UCF. Having at one point served in the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, I am also an associate member of the Council of State Social Studies Specialists, made up primarily of state department level supervisors from across the country. As a member of both CUFA and CS4, I am reaching out to you on behalf of that latter group. During our CS4 meeting in Boston, concerns over miscommunication (or lack of communication!) between social studies pre-service teacher educators and state level supervisors came up. Our hope, over the next couple of years, is to truly develop a stronger relationship between higher education and the state folks. What we would really like to do is invite members of CUFA to our own meeting to share research that could impact work at the state level, especially around the area of elementary social studies and social studies assessment. We also are interested in opening a dialogue between members of CUFA and CS4 on how there might be better collaboration and communication between the state level folks and the higher education folks. At this point, we can at least facilitate introductions in specific states.
