Dear Edison Families: We had hoped to be opening the 2013-2014 - TopicsExpress

Dear Edison Families: We had hoped to be opening the 2013-2014 school year on the new campus on Virginia Avenue, but it was not to be! Despite a valiant effort, the Construction Team was not able to have the new buildings ready for us to occupy before school began. While we were all packed and ready to go, the new campus was just not properly finished. So, we will be opening the school year on our current Kansas Avenue campus and will move to the new Virginia Avenue Campus in the early fall. The good news is that we have a few more weeks to enjoy our current and familiar campus and provide an orientation to the new campus for the students before we make the move. For parents of new Kindergarten students, the Kinder Picnic will be held as planned on Sunday, August 18 at 1:00 p.m. in the Kindergarten Courtyard on the current Kansas Avenue Campus. The pedestrian gate to the playground on Kansas Avenue will be open to receive families. We have had a couple of changes in our faculty this summer. Ms. Nancy Rankin retired at the end of the school year and Ms. Maggie Meade is moving from First Grade to teach Kindergarten in Room 27. We are happy to welcome Ms. Georgina Mojica as our new First Grade teacher, starting the year in Room 22. Ms. Sylvia Jimenez (Room 21) will be teaching 2nd grade this year and Ms. Laura Maiztegui (Room 6) will be teaching 4th grade. We are also pleased to welcome Mr. Leonel Mendoza as the new morning Assistant Physical Activities Specialist. Our opening routines will be the same as in past years. Class assignments will be posted on the front doors of the office at 4:00 p.m. the day before school begins (Wednesday, August 21). On Thursday, August 22, we will be ready to welcome students for a full day of classes. Kindergarten students begin school at 8:15 am and are dismissed at 1:35 pm First and Second Graders begin their day at 8:15 am and are dismissed at 2:45 pm. And our Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade students begin at 8:30 am and are dismissed at 3:00 p.m. On the first day of school, there will be coffee in Carolina’s Garden near the library between 8:15 and 9:00 a.m., so come and mingle with other parents for a few moments, reconnect and celebrate the first year of the 2013-2014 school year. We will have our Back to School Nights and Fall Book Fair on the Kansas Avenue Campus because we don’t want to delay those important opportunities for you to meet your child’s teacher, learn about the curriculum and opportunities to support your child, and hear about the programs and special events planned for this year. Our September meetings (all on the Kansas Avenue Campus) will be held as follows: Grade Level Chats with the Principal (school initiatives and policies, routines that will change when we move to the new campus, and important ways parents can support students at each grade level) -- These meetings will be held in the Edison library from 8:15 – 9:15 am for Kindergarten (Friday, August 23), 1st Grade (Monday, August 26), and 2nd Grade (Tuesday, August 27). Meetings for 3rd and 4th grade are from 8:30 -9:30 am -- 3rd Grade on Wednesday, August 28, and 4th Grade on Thursday, August 29. The 5th Grade meeting is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, August 29 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. This meeting will also include planning for major 5th grade activities. All meetings will be held in the library on the Kansas Avenue Campus. Back to School Night(s) will be held as follows: GRADES DATE DINNER AVAILABLE PARENT MEETING CLASSROOMS OPEN K-1-2 Wednesday, September 11 5:00 p.m. -- 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. 3-4-5 Wednesday, September 18 5:00 p.m. -- 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. As soon as we have a definite date for the move to the Virginia Avenue Campus, we will have parent meetings and send you written information with details about the move, information about dropping off and picking up at the new site, and opportunities to tour the new campus. So, we’ll see you soon on the Kansas Avenue Edison Campus – ready to begin a great year of learning and growth for our students! Hasta pronto, Lori S. Orum, Principal
