Dear Friends, Thank you so much for your incredible support for the Tide spots. I feel proud to be part of this groundbreaking campaign for many reasons. As a child, the only role models for gay people I saw on TV were drag queens, serial killers and formerly-closeted celebrities who were dying of AIDS - a moment too late for Harvey Milk and moment too early for Harvey Fierstein. I experienced bullying, a desire not to live as a result of it, and vowed that if I survived my adolescence, I would speak for those without a voice until they found theirs. Every week, I read about human beings like 12 year-old Ronan Shimizu, who killed himself over the bullying he received for being a cheerleader, and whose death inspired subsequent online cheering by his bullies... 8 year-old Gabriel Fernandez, whose own mother tortured him to death over the course of a year for suspecting he was gay... and 26 year-old Stephen Patrick White, a war vet who was set on fire in North Carolina last month, where Republican congressmen likened Ashevilles support of marriage equality to the rise of the Nazi movement... Not to mention Pastor Scott Lively, who continues to urge death for all gay people, and Michigans new law legalizing discrimination against gay people needing in need of emergency medical care... ALL of these crimes against humanity happened and are happening in the US, and in my humble opinion, the only solution - or, perhaps, the next best step toward it - is for the public to continue to be exposed to the normal lives of loving couples of all kinds, right at home in their living room. It is harder for parents to turn off a commercial than it is to turn off a TV show or film, and I dont believe that children are born hating... So, if you dont agree with the haters of this spot who claim that using Tide will give them AIDS, or that this is yet another step of the deadly gay agenda, please consider helping me not only thank the folks brave enough to make such commercials for the first time, but to ask them to air it in the USA.
