Del Rio was born in Antwerp , the son of a family of Spanish origin . He rose to the position of Kronanwalts of Brabant, before he joined the Jesuit order in 1580 . His Disquisitionum magicarum presented a comprehensive view of witchcraft and demonology dar. It built on the conclusions of the Malleus maleficarum on and discussed all subjects of the Maleficia to best approach the judge in witch trials . Although the author was called good, to grant the accused for witchcraft legal representation , and issues such as lycanthropy met with reservations , but he showed a decided intolerance against alleged witches and a certain credulity , when it came to their supernatural powers. He argued that judges were obliged about witches who had made a confession to impose the death penalty , and suggested that anyone who protested against such draconian measures should be suspicious of witchcraft itself . Del Rios book went through many editions. It was spread throughout Europe and was on his area one of the most important compendia and partly to justify the worst elements of witch-hunting . Its last edition was published only in 1747.
