Description Adenoids is the name given to a lump of lymphoid tissue that sits between the tonsils, higher up in the back of the mouth. This tissue cannot be seen without special instruments or x-rays, since it is hidden behind the roof of the mouth. It is located right behind the nose (in an area called the nasopharynx), and if it is large enough, it can block air from flowing through the nose. The adenoids become swollen for just the same reasons as the tonsils - infections, both viral and bacterial, as well as allergic stimuli. If the adenoids are quite large, they can cause significant respiratory obstruction, with resultant chronic mouth breathing. This mouth breathing can cause permanent changes in the facial shape - "adenoidal facies" with elongation of the face and an open-mouthed, slack-jaw appearance. Nighttime respiratory obstruction, with snoring and even sleep apnea can cause significant load upon the right side of the heart. Other problems caused by chronic adenoid hypertrophy include blockage of the eustachian tubes and chronic ear disease and hearing loss. Remedies Care at Home • Encourage your child to get plenty of rest and sleep. • Give plenty of oral fluids to keep the throat moist and prevent dehydration. • Provide comforting and warm liquids or water with honey as this may soothe a sore throat. • Prepare and make your child gargle salt water as this soothes a sore throat. • Use a cool-air humidifier to eliminate the dry air as it may irritate a sore throat. • Lozenges can be chewed by children older than four years of age. • Your home should be kept free from cigarette smoke. Home Remedies • Milk: Boiled milk with a dash of pepper and turmeric powder can be taken every night for three days. • Garlic cloves: Garlic is very useful in the treatment of adenoids. Two to three cloves should be taken every day and they need to be pounded and made into a thick paste. Warm this mixture and squeeze out the juice and add honey. Drink this mixture very slowly as it coats the adenoids. • Golden-seal tea: Gargle this tea several times a day. • Echinacea and myrhh: This a good remedy for adenoid gland swelling. • Vitamin-C: This vitamin helps to keep your immunity high and fights against infections and helps in the healing process. • Lemon or lime juice: Lime juice added in warm water with honey and ginger will help reduce the infection. • Herb tea: This type of tea is prepared by adding sassafras, red clover and burdrock root. This can be taken three times a day. • Garlic juice: Pour a few drops of garlic juice in your ears. • Warm olive oil: Two to three drops of this oil should be put into each of the ears as this helps to reduce the infection. • Vegetable juice: Juices of beet, carrot and cucumber are of great help to treat adenoid inflammations.
