Despite Ethiopias fast-growing higher education system, government restrictions have marred the success of higher education with underlying tales of repression. Students are allegedly forced to join one of the three government parties, with reports of restricted curricula, classroom spies and crackdowns on student protests becoming commonplace at universities. Protests against the government are met with violence and the government maintains strict control over the domestic media, with very few reports of dissidence making it into international media circuits.
