Despite Rackhams pressure of work he allowed himself time away on fishing trips, either alone or with friends. He did enjoy his own company and in 1933 gave an idyllic, reflective picture of his holidays alone with his fishing rod and his modest silent companion, (his paint box). I will choose...a river...below the Alps. We will wander not too far, and when weve found our resting place, well sling the rucksack off our shoulders, and take out the bottle of wine and sink it carefully in a cool cranny under the river bank...Weve got a fishing rod with us, and it will do our credit...with the wilderness-singer no wrong if a couple of trout, broiled on the embers of a wood fire, add character to the simple menu - the sausage, the hard-boiled eggs with their screw of salt, oranges, grapes, nuts, delicious bread. But that wont be till one oclock or so. Meantime not only will my silent companion have begun his modest part, but the sunny warmth of the gleaming water may well have tempted a secret nudist plunge...Or the scene may have been high up among winter snows. Roasting on the sunny side of a hay-chalet with skis standing sentinel. No trout, no bathing, but the inevitable little paint box, and what an appetite! Or - but this is praise enough. Like the sundial, my paint box counts no hours but sunny ones.
