Devotional Thoughts for Second Sunday of Holy Lent St. Luke 5:12 And it came about that while he was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus he fell on his face and implored him, saying, Lord, if you are willing you can make me clean. 13 And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I am willing; be cleansed. And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And he ordered him to tell no one, But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded., for a testimony to them. 15 But the news about him was spreading even farther, and great multitudes were gathering to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But he himself would often slip away to the wilderness to pray. Here we have to learn followings from the action of the leper. 1. He saw Jesus Christ coming to him. Do we recognize when he comes to us or He knocks on our door. Are we always keen and ready to see Him and open our heart to indwelt in us 2. He fell on his face and implored which mean saashashtanga pranamam in other words kumbiduka. The real need of worshiping Him when He is with us or when He comes to us. The real orthodox concept and the importance of kumbideel during lent is implied here: And that is the reason why the Holy Church has chosen this miracle for devotional thoughts. Are we ready to surrender our selves for His wish to be fulfilled in us? 3. Implored Him saying Lord if you are willing you can make me clean. He never compelled Jesus to heal him. He did not offer any reward to Jesus if He heals him. My Lord and My God if you will your healing action may happens to me or else it is your wish and give me strength to sustain it. This is not a thing to be procured with some offering or by paying cash. The real orthodox way of pleading if you are willing remove the burden from me. it is Thy wish. 4. His courage to approach Jesus even though the customs did not allow a leper to be seen in public. Are we sometime reluctant to do such an approach due to the social set up., and ignore to pray or worship Almighty God. Are we not non confident that for every thing have to approach Him to seek His will. 5. implored can be termed us cried loudly. When a person is not able to sustain his sufferings he cry loudly. In malayalam Nilavilichchu karanju prarthikkuka is the correct meaning implies. He always replies to the prayers of the one who implores to him in sorrow and pain. Tearful prayer always need pain and sorrow and loud cry. 6. Always share with others the gifts given to us by the Almighty God. Jesus commanded the leper to do the ritual as per the law and not do disclose the healing, whereas he went and proclaim all his way and street. This does not mean saksyam parachil and making business., as it is very clear Jesus did not wish for it which can be seen in subsequent readings. Now let us devout on the action of Jesus Christ 1. Jesus coming. He is always coming to us., in all our actions of life whether it will be in happy moments or at the time of distress. 2. His Power. Last miracle was his power over nature, making water as wine. Here we see His power over the sickness as well as His power over the Law. The society law did not allow interference with a leper and a leper with his fellow beings. At the first century leprosy was considered as non curable., whereas He had the authority and power over it. 3. His Personality. Jesus never wish any popularity and publicity, that is why when the crowd came in multitude he withdrew Him self to solidarity and prayer with His Father 4. He stretched His hand to the leper. He should have uttered a word. Let you be cleaned. Here a very consoling touch,. what a great relief to a person who is rejected from the society and even from his own house. 5. Go and show yourselves to the priest and offer the offerings as Moses commanded. A Lord and God who always insist us to abide and adhere to the laws of the nation of the church where in we live. Action for us. This man was leper which were visible by others. But what about us if we think and measure our inner heart. What a sort of so cruel and ugly are my thoughts my mind Almighty God Give me a pure heart which can be submitted to you as an acceptable offering. it is the time for repentance O my mind turn to God. He will make me white like snow though my sins are red like scarlet. Let us have sathyakumasaaram during this lent so that we can show ourselves to God Almighty God like the healed leper who showed himself as cleaned in front of the Priest.
