Division 1 Preview SAAFL© AFTER last weekend’s round of football, one team has emerged as the dark horse of the competition. Adelaide University has been the ‘giant killer’ of Division 1 thus far, defeating Salisbury North and most recently fourth placed Tea Tree Gully, both in emphatic fashion. This week’s test against undefeated Goodwood Saints will gauge how the Blacks are travelling and if they can be considered as finals contenders. Uni’s mid season revival has stemmed from the return of William Paynter from the Crows Reserves, his brother Seb, Brodie Borg and Simon Sharley. These players influence’s will have to be nullified in order for Goodwood to control this match. The Saints were pushed at the weekend by a determined Portland, however, when tested, remained composed and wrestled back the ascendency. Under lights at Goodwood Oval is the setting for this great match up and expect a determined and willing Adelaide University outfit to challenge the Saints for four quarters. A crucial clash between Salisbury North and Port District will decide who will take fifth place by Saturday evening. Currently on 5 wins apiece, neither side can afford to lose this contest, with the repercussions immense. The Hawks recent form has been questionable of late and as a result has seen them drop out of the top 5. Port District likewise has struggled in recent weeks to gather momentum and string consecutive wins together. With both sides desperate to be positioned in the top 5 and move a game clear of their rivals neither team will want anything less than a win. Fourth placed Tea Tree Gully host third placed Henley, hoping to bridge the gap between them and the Sharks. At the weekend, the Wolves struggled to find any fluency in their game against a rejuvenated Adelaide University but also failed to find and avenue to goal. Henley had no trouble scoring, however, against bottom side St Peters Old Collegians. Leading from start to finish, the Sharks were never headed and gave their percentage another healthy boost. Reeling from an opportunity gone begging, Tea Tree Gully will bounce back and regain a top 3 position. Elsewhere, Rostrevor Old Collegians should continue to mount pressure on Goodwood at the top of the ladder when they travel to lowly St Peters and Portland can keep their season alive if they defeat Gaza at home. Although resigned to relegation, the Eagles are capable of causing an upset or two and can determine the outcome of final positions.
