Do I really need to deadlift? I get this question a lot, especially from younger or beginning lifters. The first thing Ill usually ask them is Why dont you want to deadlift? The answer is, unsurprisingly, often times something along the lines of its hard or it doesnt feel right. (If it doesnt feel right, take 2 minutes to check out this video which will quickly show you how to properly deadlift!) Heres the deal: No, you dont have to deadlift, if you dont want to. But think about what youre really doing by not deadlifting. Its not just simply about picking up weight. Its about pushing yourself outside of your comfort zones. If youre always just settling for the comfortable and easy things in life, youre not going to grow. Its that simple. We grow fastest when we try new things, and force ourselves to stay disciplined in trying those things. So for anyone who doesnt want to deadlift, thats totally fine. After all, it is your life and you should be able to live it how you want to. But think about why you dont want to deadlift. Be honest with yourself.
