Do you have problems with mold? The following is from a gentleman who has a degree in chemical engineering and who writes articles for Practical Sailor magazine. This is an incredibly inexpensive formula for taking care of the problem. It is environmentally friendly, the ingredients are easy to find (Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc), and it is very gentle on your wallet as well. I did a magazine article on this very topic, for a sailing magazine. I tested a lot of stuff, but ended up coming up with my own formula that beat all comers (Formula B). Not a rare problem on boats that leak, or even mine when someone leaves a window open (the cabin walls are carpet). Fortunately, painted walls are generally pretty simple, and with this treatment it wont come back. Attached are several links and a file. The main points are: More is not better. Do not increase the chemical concentration. Spray or wipe on (as always, test in a corner first--I have not had troubles, but paint varies). DO NOT RINSE OFF. Just wipe off excess before it dries. You can paint over it, if needed. The residue is what prevents return. Works just as well on fabrics and carpet. Our basement is a problem and I have thoroughly tested this on carpet there. Again, you want to leave the residue; clean with other detergents, but use the Borax formula as the rinse. And its cheap! Concrobium is a closely related formula for 30x the price... that doesnt work as well. sail-delmarva.blogspot/2013/04/borax-stopping-mildew-and-rot-on-cheap.html practical-sailor/blog/-11249-1.html -- Its certainly possible that other cleaners and bleach may power mildew off better, but this will keep it away better and will not bleach colors.
