Do you know that we can prolong suffering by our response to it? I once talked with a woman who lived with chronic depression and suicidal tendencies for a long time. She said, “I realize now that all those years stemmed from my own rebellion against the Lord when I was walking through the desert of life.” It reminds me of Psalm 68:6 where it says, God “leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.” If you’re discouraged or depressed, it may not be because you’ve done something wrong. God could be preparing to lead you to prosperity. But the way you handle the crisis could cause many more years of wandering. So don’t stay in a parched land any longer than you have to.
