Do you now all you need to know about MRSA? MRSA is an antibiotic-resistant disease. Because of a weakened immune system coupled with more frequent visits to healthcare facilities, many elderly people have an increased risk of contracting MRSA. MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. MRSA is a bacteria that can cause infections in different parts of the body. MRSA has been around since the 60’s but had morphed into a bacteria that is resistant to current antibiotics. You may be a carrier of MRSA without becoming ill or showing any side effects until the MRSA bacteria has the opportunity to enter the body through a cut or a sore. Also, MRSA spreads by contact. You could get it simply by touching another person who has it on their skin. Most MRSA infections start in hospitals, nursing homes and other health-care centers. Elderly people are at an increased risk. In fact, several studies have shown the average age of people with MRSA to be in their late 60’s. MRSA infections typically start as small red bumps that look like pimples, boils or spider bites. They can become abscesses you have to have surgically drained. If the bacteria moves from the skin into the body, this can cause life-threatening internal infections. Here are four recommended preventative measures: 1. Wash your hands. 2. Sanitizing linens. 3. Keep wounds covered. 4. Keeping personal items personal. IF YOU THINK YOU MAY HAVE MRSA, CONTACT YOUR PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY!!
