Dog owners encouraged to heed lambing season With lambing season underway, Christchurch dog owners are being reminded to keep their dogs on a leash when exercising them in the Port Hills. Christchurch City Council Animal Control Team Leader Mark Vincent says that there have already been a number of incidents in which unrestrained dogs have chased and mauled lambs, particularly in the Scarborough, Godley Head Reserves and Rapaki regions of the Port Hills. “Lambing season finishes around October, and until then it’s important that we keep our dogs leashed and under control at all times if we’re taking them into the Port Hills for a walk,” Mr Vincent says. Other areas with vulnerable stock include Yaldhurst and Belfast. Animal Control Officers will conduct random visits to areas to enforce these requirements. “The health and wellbeing of this stock is vital,” Mr Vincent says. “If a dog is caught amongst this stock, its owner can face serious penalties, with fines up to $300.” The Council’s Animal Control Team can be contacted at 03 941 8999 or [email protected] .
