Dont hate Hobby Lobby. There has been a concerted, decades-long project on behalf of conservative political, social, and economic organizations to conflate religious morality with their long-term economic agenda, which is in short to reap the maximum profit at the minimum cost. Yes, there are believers, but they could never do it alone. The hardcore religious right has money, but theyre less organized and more heterogeneous than most liberals and moderates assume. Behind the curtain there are immensely cynical people who despise not just the ACA, but all even partially business-funded healthcare. Theyre easily winning a perception battle that casts them as pro-life, and pro-traditional marriage, when in both cases whats actually being avoided is businesses being legally compelled to shell out more money toward employee and partner healthcare costs. Its not about God, its about overhead. Any argument to the contrary is the result of effective and assiduous marketing. We can draw an analogy between US politicians who lead people with conservative Christian rhetoric and different kinds of politicians in some parts of the Middle East, who ascribe martyrdom to young, passionate men, but who never seem to don the suicide vest themselves. Theres a vast, headless conspiracy that we should actually avoid thinking of as a discrete entity, but were it one, it would be quite satisfied that people are angry with five justices and Hobby Lobby, who dont think employers should shell out for the pill, and personally I agree. I dont want any business paying for anyones birth control. I want liberals and progressives to give up the half-measures already and demand that corporations and the top 10% pay their fair share in income taxes, with no loopholes. I want a drastic reduction in defense spending, with all this newly freed-up wealth redistributed into public health services and public education, so we can stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the developed world, and not ten steps behind, pretending were ten steps ahead. Noam out.
