Douglass Wallop was an American writer and playwright. His first novel, 1953s Night Light, concerns a fathers search into the background of his childs murderer. Al Hine of the Saturday Review said its a novel that is moving and tautly interesting from first page to last. Mr. Wallop writes fluently and without affectation, even when he is exploring the subcellars of bop. Visually exploring the “subcellars of bop” and the perils of “jazz hands” is Tom Dunn who got his start as a courtroom illustrator during the Second World War. Between 1951 and1957 he provided cover illustrations for Signet Books, then Pocket Books. He was Pocket Books first full-time cover artist. He also did covers for other imprints of Pocket Books: Perma Books and Cardinal Books. Dunn has a way with the portrayal of youth on the edge such as Sam Graftons A Most Contagious Game (1956). The cover he did for Mardios Beach (1956) by Oakley Hall is a masterpiece of staging.
