Drags 49 Bank of England 7 10 Occies and 10 Drags take to the field to beat a Bank of England club XV 48 to 7 Saturdays game against Bank was a great example of how far the club has come this year with the old guard who used to play there in MM1 and young guns of the ever strengthening Drags mixing it up to play some impressive rugby. In Banks defence the the scoreline was much larger than it should have been owing to the fact we had to lend Bank a couple to make up the numbers which although it brought them up to stregth meant they had a coupe players out of position and with no bench they were stretched to the limit by some great counter attacking rugby from Welsh. The game started much as it would for the rest of the 80 minutes with Welsh struggling a bit with the breakdown reffing and conceding far too many penalties to give bank a lot of territory, a solid bank scrum giving no side the advantage in that area and a 50 50 lineout. So the differentiator was going to be what each side did when they had the ball. Bank had some quality players on their side with some great ball carriers and hard hitters who certainly made their presence felt but within 8 minutes Welsh turned a ball over in their 22 and counter attacked with a length of the field try, the irony was to be that most of our pressure in their half yielded few scores whereas counter attacks from our own half led to some stunning hands and scores. special mention to Oggie bunring round the outside for a try from just inside our own half and Morgan James having a stormer at Full Back with not only some great runs and length of the pitch try scoring and making but also an on the line tackle that stopped bank getting back into it. Pete Donovan was also impressive ball in hand and Wattsy when he changed sides was defensively tight for them stopping a certain Welsh try (traitor) and also counter running himself into open space to only be tackled with no other Bank player in support. John Davies put in a great shift for his first time at SH and Higgins as usual was the marshal needed to ensure the troops were in the right place and play making our attacks, Higgins is always a great 10 to have in any side. The pack were solid with Ollie Tuckwell hooking really well in a tight scrum turning over a couple and Greg his usual abbrasive self leading from the front. Jamie Goodwin was everywhere making some great yards and in fact all the pack worked their nuts off in the area where Bank really had parity. At the end of the day though I cant mention all individually but have to say a storming game won on the day by our backs making the most of hard won ball. Bank with a full backline would definitely be a handful as their quality was evident but their lack of specialists in a couple of key positions meant we had the talent to exploit it and make it the impressive margin it was against a side technically 3 leagues above the Drags. So a good win some great new players on show, as Horgs said about the Druids, lets finish the Season with a bang. Last league games next week and hopefully an Occies club side out on the 26th.
