Due to language contact with English, there has been an expression similar to do the V-ing emerging in Taiwan Mandarin. The expression has been widely used in colloquial speech and news media. Many purists from Chinese Language and Literature departments all over Taiwan blast the use of such an expression and criticize that the younger generation is linguistically deficient/corrupted. This reminds me of how African American Vernacular English has been stigmatized, so I couldnt help defending the younger generation, but the whole society seems to take on the purist side. I feel like I was Nicolaus Copernicus aruguing for Heliocentrism.
