E-mail sent to my Business IS professor: Prof. Chin, I wasnt sure whether or not we were going to discuss the Lavabit article during the next class, so I wanted to exchange some dialogue regarding surveillance. When studying frightened nations of the past I cant help but notice a trend in people willingly giving up their rights piecemeal to feel some sense of security. This would explain why leaders like HItler and Stalin were able to come to power with minimal resistance. If people are kept afraid, they will submit to their government in exchange for safety. Surveillance is not a new phenomena in this country. There are records dating back to the Civil War, and Im sure we could find more if we searched hard enough. However, where does it stop? If we keep allowing the government to spy on our every move, how long will it be before they are not just looking for criminals and terrorists, but anyone who may be speaking too negatively about the administration? It seems that with each passing day we are stepping further away from the society that was intended in 1776 and more toward a world speculated by George Orwell. On that note, have a great Spring Break!
