ETERNITY CONSCIOUSNESS (7) “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14, NIV) Let me share with you again, one of the dreams that the LORD showed me about the unwise choices of many and the eternal consequences of these choices. I saw a lone soldier sleeping in a big field. He was apparently left behind by his troop when he was sleeping. Suddenly, a carnival-like party of a huge number of merry-makers who were having lots of fun got started all around the soldier. The noise of the partiers woke him up. The soldier then realised the people were not aware of a looming war that could potentially consume them all. He knew they were all exposed, yet he couldn’t warn them because they were not in the mood to listen to such warning. Immediately he started running away from them and began to search for his troop that had moved on. He knew that was the only way to save himself. Dear friends, in the opening Scripture we see the Lord Jesus’ solemn and implicit advice about a trend in the church. People will take to a teaching, church norm or manner of living just because it is popular. Very few will bother to find out whether or not it aligns with the heart of God. “Now the Berean Jews…received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men” (Acts 17:11-12). The Bereans’ action is a perfect example for us all. No message, interpretation or doctrine ought to be accepted passively. We must examine it by personal, prayerful study of Scriptures devoid of doctrinal prejudices and/or denominational biases. The Lord warns that many will be led to their deaths even from within the church. That is why Jesus Christ and His Word must be the centre and focus of our lives. A personal relationship with Him brings knowledge and understanding, and removes ‘Pastor said, Pastor said’—this dangerous phenomenon that is becoming more popular than Scriptures in some churches. In fact, the wise pastor – and I thank God Almighty because my pastor is very wise – will teach the sheep in his fold to focus on the Lord Jesus instead of man. Remember, “…small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Let us make every effort to be among the few that will persevere until the end in true faith, purity and love. The eternal consequences are too weighty for us not to. God bless you.
