EXCLUSIVE: GEJ vs OBAMA! #Jonathan’s 40 Minutes Meeting With Obama# President Goodluck Jonathan and his United States counterpart, Mr. Barrack Obama, yesterday had a 40-minute bilateral meeting where both leaders discussed series of issues ranging from good governance to security. At the High-level meeting which took place between both leaders at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, Jonathan thanked the US president for the cooperation of the US government with the Nigerian government. Jonathan also urged Obama to intensify his efforts in ensuring that there is a collaboration between both nations to ensure that masterminds of insecurity in Nigeria are effectively tackled. On good governance, Jonathan told his US counterpart that his administration had been able to ensure good governance and a stable democratic process in the country, adding that he was sure, from the judgement of international observers, that the 2011 election that brought him to power as president was the most credible in the history of the country. He however admitted that the election that brought him into power in 2007 as vice-president to the late President Umaru Yar’adua had some flaws. He said he believed that there were flaws in the election as a result of the fact that three out of the seven judges that presided over the court suit that followed the election in 2007 faulted the results. Responding, Obama pledged the support of his administration to help Nigeria in the development of the country’s economy. He also assured Jonathan that his administration would help the Nigerian government in its fight against Boko haram and terrorism in the country. On good governance, Obama lauded the Jonathan-led administration, saying that he had been monitoring all the activities of the federal government to develop the economy of the country and to as well ensure good governance and credible elections in the country. Obama also promised that his administration would continue to actualize the objectives behind the formation of the United States-Nigeria Bi-National Commission (BNC). At the New York Stock Exchange, President Jonathan explained that the economy of Nigeria had the tendency of growing at the required 6.5%, adding that foreign investors from the United States should continue to come to the country to do their business. He added that the country was safe for foreigners. In an earlier briefing, President Jonathan praised the Ambassadors Adebowale Adefuye and Joy Ogwu, both the Nigeria’s Ambassador to the US and Permanent Representative to the UN respectively, for their efforts to sell the transformation agenda of Nigeria to both the United States government and the United Nations. President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to address the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the headquarters of the global body in New York today (Tuesday) where he will be unveiling the efforts of his government to actualize the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). On the president’s delegation are the Ministers for Finance, Trade and Investment and Petroleum respectively, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Olusegun Aganga and Allison Madueke, the Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Prof. Ade Adefuye, his UN counterpart, Prof. Joy Ogwu, Governors of Ondo and Gombe states, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwabo, Dr. Aliko Dangote, Mr. Femi Otedola and many others.
